She was filmed glancing at her Apple Watch, as she paid her respects at Lindsey Graham’s funeral in Washington.
Social media users quickly seized on the short video clip. Commentators accused the president’s daughter-in-law of being bored and acting disrespectfully during the two-hour event.
Instead of ignoring the growing backlash, she tackled the controversy directly. She released a video to explain exactly what happened in those few seconds, Huffpost reports.
Urgent camp calls
The distraction was entirely family-related, according to HuffPost. She revealed that she had missed repeated calls from the counselors at her kids’ summer camp in New York.
Seeing repeated missed calls from caretakers instantly triggers alarm bells. “Any parent knows that that is not good.
That means there’s a problem. That means they may need to reach me. That means someone is hurt or something,” she explained.
Her priority was assessing the danger without making a scene. “So, I did what any parent would do, and I tried to very discreetly inquire as to what was going on so that I could at least know that I had the ability to stay seated in the funeral,” she said.
Pushing back hard
The viral outrage completely misrepresented her intentions. “But the only thing you’ll see is ‘Lara Trump checks her watch,’ like I’m checking the time. Get over yourselves,” she stated.
The incident, she added, shows “how manipulated so much of what you see out there truly is.”
She directed a sharp message at her detractors while defending her actions. “The only mistake anybody made in our family, and of course we’ll always make mistakes for all the lunatics out there, was that I happened to glance down and try to like figure out what’s going on with my kids,” she added, according to Huffpost.
