When political alliances are tested, most lawmakers stay quiet and protect their own. But every so often, an internal revolt breaks out. A staggering bill for a tropical celebration has just triggered exactly that kind of rare rebellion.
Crossing the line
Republican Senator John Curtis wants his own party to launch a serious investigation. He asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to examine Donald Trump Jr. over his recent wedding festivities.
On Tuesday, the Utah lawmaker sent a formal letter demanding a subpoena. He wants to discover if the president’s son leveraged family connections for financial gain.
This move arrives as Republicans begin publicly challenging the White House, according to the Mirror US.
A lavish celebration
The controversy centers on a tropical island getaway. Last week, ProPublica revealed that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev helped pay for wedding after-parties in the Bahamas.
Kremlev has known ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reports indicate the billionaire covered the cost of renting a private island and a fireworks display.
Bettina Trump later posted on Instagram about the event, calling Kremlev a “dear friend” who generously hosted two nights of celebrations. President Donald Trump stated his son would pay the Russian businessman back.
Calling out corruption
Curtis believes the situation is completely unacceptable. “A Russian oligarch paid for a lavish wedding after-party for Donald Trump Jr., which to me just stinks. It’s corruption. I don’t like it,” Curtis declared in a video shared on social media.
The senator pointed out that Republicans spent years investigating Hunter Biden over his foreign business dealings.
“The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president,” Curtis wrote.
Pushing for action
He added that blind faith is simply unacceptable. “‘Trust us’ was not enough then, and it is not enough now,” he stated.
The formal request now sits with committee leaders Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin. As the top Democrat on the panel, Durbin quickly backed the call for an inquiry.
“For the Committee to ignore this matter is to run the risk of being complicit in a coverup. I will join in supporting Senator Curtis’ request,” Durbin announced.
Scheduling a hearing might be difficult. Committee spokesperson Clare Slattery confirmed they received the letter but noted the Senate calendar is incredibly tight right now.
