The political climate in the United States has left a musical icon looking for the nearest exit. Art Garfunkel is speaking openly about his profound dismay over the nation’s current path.
In a recent interview with The Guardian cited by Huffpost, the folk-rock legend expressed deep frustration with the direction the country has taken under Donald Trump. The 84-year-old artist did not hold back his feelings.
“I don’t like America’s position at all,” he told the British newspaper. The striking comments arrived just weeks before his upcoming tour kicks off next month.
Contemplating a major move
A permanent departure from his home country is now a serious option for the Simon & Garfunkel singer. He made it perfectly clear that he feels disconnected from the current national mood.
“I’m not aboard, and I’m thinking of leaving the country, frankly,” Garfunkel said. He previously threw his support behind Bernie Sanders during the 2016 election cycle.
Massive global crises are weighing heavily on his mind right now. The singer specifically pointed to sweeping environmental and humanitarian disasters as sources of immense anxiety.
“It’s real that the planet is getting warmer, that the water’s rising, that so many people are starving,” he continued.
Shock at foreign policy
Recent international military interventions have only deepened his alarm. The singer specifically highlighted the Trump administration’s controversial actions in Venezuela as a major turning point.
American forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. That bold move left Garfunkel questioning the basic rules of modern diplomacy.
“When Donald Trump took over Venezuela, are those the new rules?” he asked The Guardian. “Just take over a country and run it?”
“It’s shocking,” he noted, while wondering aloud how the presidency could ever be changed.
Following a celebrity trend
Despite the overwhelming gloom, the Grammy winner still sees a small glimmer of light on the horizon. He reminded fans that political eras always come to an end eventually.
He stated that “Trump won’t last for ever” and added, “so we’ve got to hope.”
If Garfunkel does decide to pack his bags, he will join a growing list of stars who have already relocated. Following the 2024 election results, several prominent names actually followed through on their promises to move abroad.
