Government-funded cultural institutions regularly find themselves caught in the crosshairs of ideological policy battles in Washington.
According to The Mirror, federal agencies are preparing to deploy roughly a dozen temporary informational signs outside the National Museum of American History at an estimated cost of $84,000.
Documentation sent by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley and Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski confirmed that the National Park Service will execute the installation following an executive order signed in July.
Official correspondence frames the installation as essential visitor context regarding alleged ideological bias among academic staff.
“The informational signage, therefore, will provide visitors with important context about the exhibits they are about to encounter and the personal viewpoints that the curators of the exhibits are seeking to advance,” Doug Burgum wrote in the Sept. 3 letter.
Department claims assert that current exhibition materials promote “ideologies that distract from a coherent and accurate presentation of America’s story,” adding, “This may be the first instance in which executive branch intervention of this nature has become necessary.”
Uncertainty remains regarding the exact wording and authorship of the outdoor displays, though official statements cite museum Director Anthea Hartig and outgoing Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch as key figures advancing specific political viewpoints.
Exhibits touching upon transgender Americans and undocumented immigrants faced direct criticism within the official executive report.
Presidential Social Media Rants Target Modernist Art
Presidential commentary on Truth Social recently demanded structural alterations to the museum grounds, including replacing existing artwork with historical monuments.
Focus shifted specifically toward Infinity, a modern sculpture created by José de Rivera near the south entrance.
“I am also calling on the Smithsonian to erect a 30-foot ‘Colossus statue’ of the Father of Our Country outside the Museum, to replace the so-called ‘Infinity’ sculpture that stands there today,” Donald Trump posted on social media.
Expressing disdain for abstract design, the social media update added, “That strange modernist sculpture tells visitors nothing about America, inspires no one, and honors none of our Great American Heroes.”
Museum leadership defended academic independence during congressional testimony earlier this summer, dismissing accusations of institutional bias.
“Our work is governed by the Smithsonian’s standards of scholarship, accuracy, independence, and nonpartisanship,” Anthea Hartig told congressional committees.
“The museum does not take sides in America’s political debates. We preserve and document the evidence of American life in all its breadth, so that the public can encounter the past and draw their own conclusions,” Hartig added.
Managing federal funding alongside institutional independence remains a delicate balancing act as installation preparations move forward.
