What is happening?

Ukrainian drones, operated by the Security Service (SBU), carried out a daring overnight assault on August 4, striking five Russian fighter jets at the Saky airfield in Russian-occupied Crimea.

High-value Su-30SM Fighter destroyed

One of the most significant losses was a Su-30SM multirole fighter jet, destroyed during the attack.

Another Su-30SM was damaged, with each aircraft valued between $35 million and $50 million, according to Ukrainian officials.

Three Su-24 Bombers also targeted

Alongside the Su-30SMs, the strike also hit three Su-24 bombers—Soviet-era supersonic aircraft still used by Russia for precision strikes and reconnaissance.

All three were reportedly damaged in the operation.

Aviation weapons depot struck

In addition to targeting aircraft, Ukrainian drones also struck a key aviation weapons depot at the airbase.

The damage could severely disrupt the supply chain for future Russian air missions over the Black Sea and Ukraine.

Strategic importance of Saky Airbase

Located in Crimea, the Saky airfield is a vital hub for Russia’s Black Sea military operations.

Its role includes launching attacks on Ukraine and supporting naval activity—making it a prime strategic target.

The SBU hailed the mission as a success, saying it represents “another step toward weakening the enemy’s capacity to wage its war of aggression.”

The agency highlighted the precision and impact of the Special Operations Center “A” team behind the strike.

Russia remains silent on losses

As of now, Russian authorities have not publicly acknowledged the attack or confirmed any losses.

Kremlin silence has been a common tactic following previous Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian-held territory.

Advanced Russian jets under threat

The Su-30SM is a modern, twin-engine multirole fighter introduced in the 2010s, while the Su-24, first developed in the 1970s, remains a mainstay in Russia’s strike fleet.

Ukraine’s growing drone capabilities

On June 1, Ukraine launched Operation Spiderweb, a massive drone offensive that reportedly damaged 41 aircraft across four Russian air bases.

The operation showcased Kyiv’s expanding ability to hit far behind enemy lines.

Black Sea Fleet also hit hard

Ukraine has also inflicted serious damage on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Past drone and missile strikes have destroyed or disabled several warships, including the Caesar Kunikov, Sergei Kotov, and Ivanovets—shifting the balance of naval power in the region.
