Republican corruption problems go far beyond Trump — and the Democrats exploit it

Republicans naturally dismiss the new messaging strategy as completely hypocritical.

Politics frequently looks like a wealthy insider game played far above the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.

When grocery bills climb rapidly, tired voters demand someone to blame. One political party thinks they have found the perfect target.

Hitting local scandals

Democrats want to take back the US Senate this November.

They currently face a tough battle, with Republicans holding a comfortable 53-47 advantage in the chamber.

Party strategists are putting a heavy focus on local corruption.

Instead of just attacking Donald Trump for using a Qatari-owned jet, they are pointing fingers at the personal financial histories of individual Republican candidates.

Connecting the dots

The main goal is to tie shady Washington deals directly to the rising cost of everyday living.

New Jersey Senator Andy Kim explained the logic to HuffPost.

“This is something that can mobilize voters at the primary level and especially at the general election level, when you’re bringing in those swing voters,” he said.

He added that the approach “appeals to people who are not just diehard tribal political voters, but to people who have real concerns about both parties and are uncertain about who to vote for.”

A trail of accusations

These political attacks cover a massive map of vital battleground states.

In Texas, Democratic challengers frequently remind voters that Attorney General Ken Paxton once offered a generous plea deal to a wealthy sex offender.

Meanwhile, an allied political group recently launched brutal television advertisements against Michigan Republican Mike Rogers.

The commercial narrator claims Rogers “stayed in Washington, cashed in on the favors he did for big special interests, pocketing millions from corporations doing business before his old committee.”

Fighting fire with fire

Republicans naturally dismiss the new messaging strategy as completely hypocritical.

They point out that many Democratic politicians maintain their own deep ties to wealthy mega-donors and powerful corporate lobbyists.

National Republican Senatorial Committee spokeswoman Bernadette Breslin released a sharp statement pushing back against the attacks.

“Whether it’s shielding a spouse’s company from liability, accepting donations from Epstein-linked elites they condemn or skirting tax obligations, Democrats like Pappas, Ossoff, Talarico and Brown have zero credibility leading an anti-corruption campaign,” she said.
