Rifle linked to deadly shooting traced back to suspect owner

A mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, has left eight children dead, in one of the most devastating incidents in the state in recent years.

Authorities are now focusing on how the suspect obtained the weapon used in the attack, reports CBS News.

Tragedy unfolds

The shooting claimed the lives of eight children aged between three and 11, while two adults were also wounded.

According to CBS News, the violence took place across two homes in the early hours, shocking the local community.

The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, later died after fleeing the scene, though officials have not confirmed whether his death was self-inflicted or the result of police action.

The scale of the attack has intensified calls for answers about how it was carried out.

Investigation into weapon

Attention has now turned to the origin of the firearm used in the shooting.

According to CBS News, federal authorities have charged 56-year-old Charles Ford after linking him to the rifle.

Prosecutors allege Ford illegally possessed the weapon and misled investigators about its whereabouts.

He later told officials he believed Elkins had taken the gun from his truck weeks before the attack.

Disputed account

Ford said he became suspicious after noticing the firearm was missing and confronting Elkins.

According to CBS News, he did not report the weapon stolen, claiming he dropped the matter after a tense exchange.

Investigators say he initially denied ever having the gun when questioned.

The firearm’s ownership history is still being examined as part of the case.

Legal consequences

Ford now faces federal charges, including illegal possession of a firearm and making false statements.

According to CBS News, both charges are directly tied to the weapon used in the shooting.

Officials say holding individuals accountable for how firearms are handled is a key part of the investigation.

“Our hope, as we continue to investigate and prosecute this case alongside our law enforcement partners, is that holding the person whose gun Elkins used to perpetrate the crime accountable will give some small bit of solace to our Shreveport community,” said US Attorney Zachary A. Keller.

Authorities have not yet clarified whether Elkins was legally barred from possessing a firearm at the time.
