A disturbing discovery in Memphis has prompted a large-scale investigation involving multiple agencies.

Authorities say the remains may have been at the site for a long period of time, reports CBS News.

Initial discovery

Police began investigating after a skull was found in a wooded area in Memphis.

According to CBS News, the remains were discovered on March 8 by a person walking their dog, who alerted authorities.

Due to low visibility, officers returned the following day to carry out a more detailed search.

This led to an extended operation over several weeks.

Expanded search

Further searches uncovered additional evidence in the same area.

According to CBS News, a second skull was found on April 1 within a drainage system.

The following day, search teams located 14 more bones nearby.

Earlier efforts using a cadaver dog had identified a drainage pipe, though no remains were initially recovered there.

Large-scale operation

Authorities have deployed significant resources to the investigation.

According to CBS News, around 170 personnel, including FBI agents and search teams, have been involved in examining the site.

Officials said the search of the specific area was expected to conclude soon, though the wider investigation continues.

The focus remains on identifying the victims and determining what happened.

Victims unidentified

Police believe the remains belong to three children between the ages of three and seven.

According to CBS News, investigators have not yet determined the cause of death.

Officials also said the children have not been linked to any known missing persons cases in the Memphis area.

This has raised concerns about how long the remains may have gone unnoticed.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities say there is no current threat to the public.

“Someone knows of missing children that we have discovered in this area,” said Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis.

“This is heartbreaking, it’s disturbing and at this time we have numerous resources to help us to identify these young people and bring closure to this investigation.”

The case remains under active investigation as officials work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
