A US military base in Iraq was struck by a rocket attack, leaving several soldiers injured, according to sources from the US Department of Defense.
Several American Soldiers Injured
According to SE the attack occurred at the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Anbar province, where American and other foreign troops are stationed. This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly with Iran expected to respond to Israel's recent assassination of a Hamas leader.
The attack, which took place overnight from August 5 to August 6, was confirmed by a Pentagon representative who stated:
"According to preliminary reports, several American soldiers were injured. Base personnel are currently assessing the damage."
While no group has yet claimed responsibility, US bases in Iraq, Jordan, and Syria have faced multiple assaults from pro-Iranian militant groups since last fall. Notably, three American soldiers were killed in a similar attack in Jordan in late January.
The Situation Remains Very Tense
The Ain al-Asad base also houses Polish personnel. Fortunately, Poland’s National Security Bureau head confirmed via social media that no Polish military or civilian staff were harmed in the attack.
He noted, "Several hours ago, a rocket strike targeted the US airbase Ain al-Asad in Iraq, where our Polish contingent is also stationed. No Polish personnel were injured. The situation in the Middle East remains very tense."
Pentagon spokesperson Gen. Patrick Ryder emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
"Secretary Austin and Minister Galant agreed that the August 5 attack by Iran-affiliated militants on US forces at Ain al-Asad in western Iraq represents a dangerous escalation and highlights Iran's destabilizing role in the region."
