Elon Musk’s clash with Brussels escalated over the weekend after the European Commission hit his platform X with a $120 million fine.

The billionaire responded with a barrage of posts attacking the European Union including a call for its outright dismantling.

His comments quickly drew international attention, not least because one prominent supporter emerged from Moscow.

Musk’s criticism intensifies

Musk posted on Saturday that “The EU should be abolished and sovereignty should be returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent the people.”

He also introduced a hashtag promoting the idea and followed with a second message asking, “How long until the EU disappears? Abolish the EU.” In another post, he claimed that “EU bureaucracy is slowly suffocating Europe to death.”

He accused the bloc of censorship and even urged the United States to sanction the EU, though he did not say whether he will legally challenge the Commission’s penalty.

Medvedev weighs in

Among those applauding Musk was Dmitry Medvedev. former Russian president and now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

Reacting directly on X, Medvedev replied simply: “Exactly.”

The endorsement drew notice given Medvedev’s frequent use of social media to criticize Western institutions and his increasingly hard-line tone since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Brussels has not yet responded publicly to their remarks.
