The closely watched case could have major implications for OpenAI’s leadership, structure and future plans, including a possible stock market listing.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has rejected accusations from Elon Musk that the company abandoned its original mission, as a high-stakes courtroom battle over the future of artificial intelligence intensifies.

The closely watched case could have major implications for OpenAI’s leadership, structure and future plans, including a possible stock market listing.

Altman takes the stand

According to Aljazeera, AFP, Reuters and the Associated Press, Altman testified in federal court in Oakland, California, on Tuesday as part of Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI.

Musk claims OpenAI shifted away from its original nonprofit purpose after securing billions in investment tied to promises about benefiting humanity.

Altman pushed back against those allegations during testimony, arguing that Musk was fully aware of the company’s direction years earlier.

Musk accuses OpenAI of betrayal

The Tesla and SpaceX billionaire has accused OpenAI leaders of transforming the organization into a profit-focused AI giant.

Musk claims he invested heavily in OpenAI based on its original mission before the company moved toward a commercial structure in 2019.

He is reportedly seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft, one of the company’s largest investors.

Rivalry spills into court

The legal fight has also highlighted the increasingly bitter relationship between Musk and Altman.

During testimony, Altman suggested Musk’s concerns were tied partly to competition in the rapidly expanding AI industry.

Musk now operates his own AI company, xAI, which develops the Grok chatbot platform.

AI race intensifies

The trial comes as competition between major AI companies continues accelerating worldwide.

OpenAI remains one of the most influential firms in the sector following the success of ChatGPT, while rivals including Google, Anthropic and xAI are investing heavily in advanced AI systems.

Industry analysts say the outcome of the lawsuit could affect how AI companies are governed and funded in the future.

IPO plans under scrutiny

The case is also drawing attention because of OpenAI’s reported long-term plans for a possible initial public offering.

Legal experts say the trial could influence investor confidence and shape future debate around nonprofit governance inside major technology companies.

As testimony continues, the courtroom battle is increasingly being viewed as one of the most significant legal disputes yet in the global AI industry.
