Scientists describe seven new diamond frog species in Madagascar

Deep inside tropical rainforests, countless mysteries remain buried beneath fallen leaves and soil.

Discovering unknown creatures often requires years of painstaking searches across rugged terrain. But sometimes, major scientific breakthroughs come from examining old specimens stored on dusty museum shelves, reports DR News.

Hiding in plain sight

An international team of scientists has discovered and described seven new species of frogs on the island of Madagascar. According to DR News, the newly identified amphibians belong to the Rhombophryne genus, commonly known as diamond frogs.

These small creatures spend most of their lives concealed beneath the forest floor, making them remarkably difficult to spot during field surveys.

Dr. Mark D. Scherz, curator of herpetology at the Danish Natural History Museum and lead author of the study, explained how easily these animals escape notice. “The diversity of diamondback frogs has been hiding right under our feet,” Scherz stated.

The breakthrough reveals that Madagascar’s most mysterious amphibian group holds far greater biodiversity than experts previously realized.

Unlocking a cold case

Solving the scientific mystery required twelve years of work. Researchers repeatedly encountered unfamiliar frogs during field trips, but matching new finds to historical records proved frustratingly difficult.

Untangling those historical records took time. Scherz noted, “Some were relatively simple to describe, while others were complicated due to uncertainty about older species descriptions. It turned out to be a puzzle that took many years to solve,”.

The major breakthrough came through museomics, a technique where scientists sequence DNA from historical museum samples. By pairing genetic data from preserved specimens with fresh field material, researchers successfully linked old species names to their true evolutionary trees.

Lessons from the past

Museum archives played a vital role in solving the decade-long puzzle.

Dr. Alice Petzold from the University of Potsdam, who led the genetic analysis, emphasized the importance of preserved collections. “Natural history collections are far more than archives of the past, they are crucial scientific resources for our understanding of biodiversity today,” Petzold explained.

Even with seven new species added to the books, researchers remain confident that more undiscovered frogs are still hiding in Madagascar’s wilderness.
