The development has again placed focus on the inner workings of the Sussexes’ charitable organisation, Archewell Philanthropies.
Emotional farewell
James Holt, executive director of Archewell Philanthropies, has confirmed he is stepping back from his role after nearly a decade working with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In a statement released following the announcement, Harry and Meghan paid tribute to him, saying: “James has been a stellar support for us for nearly ten years. His enthusiasm and talent in overseeing our philanthropic endeavours have been extraordinary.”
They added that Holt would continue to be involved with some of their work as he relocates to the UK, the Express reports.
Second departure
Holt’s decision comes just one day after Meredith Maines, the couple’s publicist, announced she was leaving her role after less than a year in the position.

The back-to-back announcements have drawn attention to staff turnover around the couple and their projects.
Holt’s statement
In his own message, Holt described his time working with Harry and Meghan as a career highlight.
“Working with Prince Harry and Meghan has been one of the great privileges of my career,” he said. He referenced projects ranging from mental health support for British soldiers to humanitarian work in Gaza.
“After five incredible years in Los Angeles, it’s time for my family to return to London,” Holt added, saying he would hand over responsibilities “with immense pride and optimism for what lies ahead.”

Long association
Holt has led Archewell Philanthropies since 2021 and previously served as the couple’s PR chief from 2019 to 2021, a period marked by intense media scrutiny as they stepped away from royal life.
He also appeared in Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary series released in 2022 and relocated to California alongside the couple.
The Express reported that Archewell accounts suggest Holt earned $245,000 in 2024.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “James Holt will remain a senior philanthropic advisor for the couple and Archewell Philanthropies, supporting their humanitarian trips overseas in 2026.”
