A deadly avalanche at a major Spanish ski destination has left three people dead, underscoring ongoing safety concerns in the Pyrenees as winter conditions remain unstable.

Deadly descent
Three skiers were killed after an avalanche swept through a popular resort area in northern Spain on Monday, December 29, emergency services said.
Six people from the same group were caught when a mass of snow rushed down the slopes of the Spanish Pyrenees, striking them as they descended from Tablato peak, near the French border in the Aragon region.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 1pm local time following reports that the group had become trapped after a fall, the Express reports.
Survivors found
One woman survived the avalanche but was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia, according to Spanish authorities.

The remaining two members of the group managed to escape with only minor injuries. Mountain rescue teams later located all six skiers using a helicopter and ground crews.
No further details have been released about the identities of those involved.
Resort location
According to the Express, the avalanche occurred in the Panticosa area, one of Spain’s most popular ski resorts, which attracts more than one million visitors each year.
At the time of the incident, the area was under a Level 2 avalanche warning issued by Spain’s weather agency Aemet. Across the border, Meteo France had also issued widespread avalanche alerts covering much of the Pyrenees.
Official reaction
Aragon’s regional president, Jorge Azcon, said he altered his schedule in response to the tragedy and the heightened avalanche risk.

Posting on X, he said: “Shocked by the news arriving from the tragic mountain accident at Tablato peak, in the municipal district of Panticosa.
I cancelled my schedule to head to the Pyrenean locality.”
Authorities have not released additional information about the victims or confirmed whether further safety measures will be introduced.
