For the first time, authorities in Russia’s Moscow region issued an official drone threat alert, warning residents to seek shelter as reports emerged of drones approaching the capital.
Residents across Russia’s Moscow region received emergency warnings about a potential drone threat on June 2, marking the first time authorities have officially activated such an alert system.
The notification came amid continued drone attacks targeting areas around the Russian capital.
Emergency warning
According to United24Media, citing ASTRA, authorities in the Moscow region issued an emergency alert through Russia’s Unified State System for Prevention and Liquidation of Emergency Situations.
Residents received mobile phone notifications warning them about a possible drone threat and advising them to take protective measures.
The alert instructed people to remain indoors, avoid windows and seek shelter if necessary.
Officials also advised anyone outdoors to move into buildings, underground crossings or parking facilities.
Safety measures
The emergency message outlined a series of precautions for residents during the incident.
“A drone threat has been declared in the Moscow region. Stay at home and do not go near windows, or proceed to a shelter,” the warning stated, according to ASTRA.
Authorities also cautioned that temporary disruptions to mobile internet services could occur.
The warning represents a notable escalation in public security measures around Moscow.
Drones near capital
According to United24Media, the alert followed reports that two Ukrainian drones had been intercepted while approaching Moscow.
Drone attacks targeting Russian territory have become increasingly frequent since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
Moscow and surrounding regions have periodically faced airport closures, internet disruptions and air defense activity linked to drone threats.
The latest warning highlights growing concerns about the vulnerability of areas far from the front line.
Economic backdrop
The emergency declaration came as Russia continues to face economic challenges linked to the war, United24Media reported.
Reports cited by the publication indicate that Russian economic growth slowed significantly, while the economy contracted during the first quarter of 2026.
Officials have attributed the slowdown to factors including high interest rates, Western sanctions and a strong ruble.
The developments add to broader pressures facing Russia as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
