Steven Spielberg’s grand 2005 science fiction film is experiencing renewed success, now dominating streaming charts in several countries.
For decades, Hollywood has pitted humanity against extraterrestrial beings. Yet, some invasions seemingly never cease to captivate audiences.
Science fiction films from the 2000s, in particular, have found new life on streaming services, where both old favorites and newer productions vie for viewers’ attention.
Now, one of Steven Spielberg’s major Hollywood productions has once again climbed to the top of the charts.
More than 20 years after its premiere, War of the Worlds from 2005 is experiencing renewed popularity in several countries, once again bringing Tom Cruise alongside millions of hostile aliens.
Makes a Streaming Comeback
According to American film outlet Collider, War of the Worlds has entered the top 10 on Apple TV’s weekly film charts in a number of countries.
Data from FlixPatrol shows, among other things, that the film is among the most popular titles in Australia, Canada, Italy, and Spain.
Thus, Spielberg’s science fiction thriller has experienced a remarkable renaissance, even though it originally premiered more than two decades ago.
The film is also available for streaming on various services in the U.S., including HBO Max and Apple TV, which has allowed a new audience to discover the grim narrative.
However, this is not a film that has only now achieved success.
Upon its premiere in 2005, War of the Worlds was a major commercial triumph, with a total global box office gross of over $600 million.
The current streaming popularity, however, demonstrates that interest in Spielberg’s invasion story is still very much alive.
Tom Cruise Faces the Worst Weekend of His Life
The story follows Ray Ferrier, played by Tom Cruise, a longshoreman living in New Jersey.
Ray is divorced from his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and his relationship with his children, Rachel and Robbie, is far from smooth.
In other words, family life is not going according to plan, and Ray struggles to find his place as a father.
The situation becomes significantly more complicated when the children come for a weekend visit.
Suddenly, mysterious events begin to strike the area, and enormous machines emerge from the ground.
It turns out that alien beings had hidden gigantic war machines beneath the Earth’s surface long before humans even knew they existed.
These machines, called tripods, launch a violent attack on the population.
Ray must therefore try to get his children to safety as society around them collapses.
Spielberg Downplayed the Hero Role
Although War of the Worlds features extensive destruction and spectacular special effects, the film differs from many traditional invasion narratives.
Ray Ferrier is not a classic action hero who steps up and saves all of humanity.
He is, first and foremost, a father trying to keep his children alive.
Spielberg allows large parts of the story to unfold from the family’s perspective, meaning that the audience rarely gets a complete overview of the invasion’s full scope.
This approach gives the film a more claustrophobic feel, where the escape from the alien beings takes precedence over humanity’s attempts to fight them.
At the same time, the narrative explores how people react when the usual societal structures suddenly cease to function.
Based on a Famous Science Fiction Novel
Spielberg’s film is based on H.G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds, which was published back in 1898.
The book is considered among the most influential works in the science fiction genre and has inspired numerous film adaptations and other stories about invasions from space over time.
The novel’s original plot takes place in England, but Spielberg moved the story to a modern American setting.
This gave the narrative a more contemporary feel while preserving the core idea of a technologically superior enemy.
The film’s dark atmosphere and focus on the survival of ordinary people made it a different kind of Hollywood blockbuster, where the grand action scenes do not necessarily lead to any sense of control or security.
Several Famous Names in the Cast
Tom Cruise is far from the only major actor in War of the Worlds.
Dakota Fanning plays his daughter Rachel, while Justin Chatwin takes on the role of his son Robbie.
Miranda Otto appears as the children’s mother, Mary Ann, and Tim Robbins plays Harlan Ogilvy, who takes on a central role during the family’s desperate escape.
The cast also includes Rick Gonzalez as Vincent, Yul Vazquez as Julio, and David Alan Basche as Tim.
