Music has always been a way for people to gather and share a joyful experience.
When large crowds come together in celebration, keeping everyone safe becomes a monumental task. Sometimes, preventing a tragedy means stopping the music entirely, reports the Associated Press.
Seeking justice
Almost two years after a security scare disrupted a major music tour, a courtroom has reached a verdict. According to a report from the Associated Press, a regional Austrian court recently sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison.
The defendant, identified as Beran A. under local privacy rules, was convicted in Wiener Neustadt. He faced multiple charges connected to a thwarted attack in the capital.
He offered a brief apology before the jury deliberated. “I would just like to say that I am sorry,” the young man stated in court.
The cancelled shows
The planned attack targeted Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for August 2024. Tens of thousands of fans had travelled to the city to see the highly anticipated Eras Tour.
Authorities immediately cancelled the performances after discovering the plot. Police searched the defendant’s apartment and reportedly found bomb-making materials just one day before the first show.
The American singer expressed her deep sorrow over the situation. “Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post.
A wider network
She also explained the emotional toll. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” Swift added.
Prosecutors alleged that Beran A. communicated with members of the Islamic State group. They claimed he discussed buying weapons and building explosive devices to use outside the stadium.
The trial involved another defendant, known as Arda K., who received a 12-year sentence. A third individual remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia.
A complex case
The Austria Press Agency reported both men were found guilty of being part of a terrorist organisation. They were also convicted of travelling for terrorist purposes.
The court additionally found them guilty of contributing to attempted murder. This charge was linked to the third man, who allegedly stabbed a security officer in Mecca.
Beran A. eventually focused his attention back on his home country. His lawyer told the press she will discuss the verdict with him soon.
