Zelensky has warned Ukrainian drones could appear over Moscow’s Victory Day parade, as Russia plans a scaled-down event amid security fears.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that drones could appear over Moscow during Russia’s Victory Day parade, highlighting rising tensions ahead of the symbolic event.
His remarks come as officials in Russia signal a scaled-down celebration amid security concerns.
Parade tensions
According to Digi24, Zelensky said Ukrainian drones could potentially fly over the May 9 parade in Moscow.
“Russia announced a parade on May 9, but there will be no military equipment at this parade. If true, it will be the first time in many years. And Ukrainian drones could also fly over this parade. This shows that they are no longer as powerful as they were before,” he said at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.
Russian authorities have indicated the event will take place in a reduced format. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cited the “operational situation” and a “terrorist threat” from Kyiv as reasons for the changes.
Ceasefire debate
Zelensky also said that President Vladimir Putin could decide by next summer whether to escalate the war or pursue diplomacy.
He urged increased pressure through sanctions to push Russia toward negotiations.
Putin, in a reported conversation with US President Donald Trump, proposed a temporary ceasefire on May 9. Zelensky rejected the idea of a short pause tied to the parade.
“Our proposal is to establish a long-term ceasefire, to guarantee reliable security for the people and lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to cooperate in this regard in any dignified and effective format,” he said.
