Trump addresses latest attack between Iran and Israel: “They had their fun”

Fresh Iran-Israel Strikes Prompt Immediate Response From Trump

Diplomatic negotiations and military calculations are increasingly colliding in the Middle East.

Fresh Israeli strikes on Iranian targets have drawn attention not only because they briefly reignited hostilities, but because they came after repeated public calls from U.S. President Donald Trump to avoid further escalation. Behind the military action lies a broader dispute over who gets a seat at the negotiating table as Washington pursues a potential agreement with Tehran.

Strikes Follow Regional Escalation

According to Reuters, Israel launched attacks against targets in Iran on Monday after Tehran fired missiles toward Israel. Iranian officials described their missile launches as retaliation for earlier Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

Fighting was short-lived, with both sides later halting fire following intervention from Trump. Even so, analysts say the Israeli operation carried a political message as much as a military one.

According to military historian Danny Orbach of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israeli leaders wanted to make clear that any future arrangement involving Iran cannot ignore Israeli security concerns.

“Because if it tramples too heavily on Israeli interests, Israel can overturn the table.”

Trump has spent months attempting to negotiate a broader settlement with Iran while largely keeping Israel outside the direct discussions. At the same time, Washington has pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid actions that could derail diplomacy.

Lebanon at the Center of the Dispute

Much of the disagreement revolves around Lebanon and Hezbollah.

Israeli officials fear that a future U.S.-Iran understanding could limit Israel’s freedom to conduct military operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that Netanyahu and senior security officials discussed that issue extensively before authorizing the latest strikes.

Iran, meanwhile, has repeatedly linked any broader agreement with Washington to maintaining a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Following the latest exchange of fire, Trump signaled that he considered the matter settled.

“Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one.”

Israeli leaders appear less convinced that the issue has been resolved. Netanyahu later warned that Israel would respond forcefully to any future attack from Iran.

Limits to Israel’s Military Independence

While Israel has demonstrated the ability to strike Iranian targets without direct U.S. involvement, military experts question how long such a campaign could continue without American support.

Security analysts note that advanced munitions and logistical backing remain critical factors in any prolonged conflict.

Yehoshua Kalisky of Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies argued that Israel’s military capabilities have practical limits.

“There’s no doubt that Israel (cannot) go alone in this war for a long, long time, because (the) ammunition is consumable.”

Recent events have highlighted growing strains between Netanyahu and Trump despite their long-standing political alignment. Publicly, both leaders continue to emphasize their relationship, but the dispute over Iran has exposed differences over strategy, diplomacy and the future shape of any regional settlement.
