When that property is the most famous residence in America, even basic upkeep turns into a major spectacle.
Now, a new six-figure bill has dropped for a very specific basement recreation room.
A pricey recreation room
Upgrading an iconic hangout at the executive mansion is expensive, and federal records reveal a massive bill.
According to the Irish Star, the government handed a staggering $253,000 contract to Charles Mann Enterprises in June, sending the funds straight toward lighting upgrades for the historic Harry S. Truman Bowling Alley.
A White House official downplayed the cost, calling the project routine.
They explained, “These were standard modifications and repairs to the Bowling Alley, such as fixing broken light fixtures.”
Decades of history
The famous lanes date back to 1947. Missouri supporters originally funded the space as a birthday present for President Truman, and Dwight Eisenhower later moved the facility to the Executive Office Building.
The space sees heavy traffic from staff. According to the spokesperson, “Since then, the TBA has been open to guests for over a year and hosted nearly 10,000 external guests.”
They confirmed the president had no personal involvement in ordering the fixes. “Each administration historically improves and maintains the EEOB and its public spaces upon transition,” the official added.
Separate security contracts
Another contract for $8,800 sparked questions about escort services. That money pays security staff to guide civilian contractors through restricted areas.
The administration quickly issued a statement to separate this specific expense from the bowling lanes.
The spokesperson clarified it was “an independent bid for a project for a different agency operating on the WH Complex, which included asbestos abatement and other communication technology upgrades.”
They firmly stated, “There is no connection between that and the Truman Bowling Alley.”
The ballroom battle
During Barack Obama’s tenure, a similar proposal to completely overhaul the lanes collapsed after furious Republican lawmakers blocked the idea as a waste of taxpayer money.
Meanwhile, a much larger construction project is moving forward upstairs. The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the president can continue building his massive East Wing ballroom.
The decision ends a bitter legal dispute with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, completely shutting down their lawsuit.
Government attorneys successfully argued the 90,000-square-foot expansion is necessary for national security, and crews are now working relentless 20-hour shifts to finish the structure.
