Renovation plans for the White House are continuing to expand, with new details revealing proposed changes to one of the building’s most recognisable architectural features.

The plans are part of President Donald Trump’s ambitious ballroom project, which has already sparked criticism over cost, scale and respect for the site’s historic character.

West Wing expansion

President Trump wants to add an extra floor above the famous White House colonnade in the West Wing, according to the architect leading the project.

Shalom Baranes told the US Capital Planning Commission that the added level would create a sense of “symmetry”, Digi24.ro reported, citing AFP and Agerpres.

The new floor would sit above the covered walkway that links the main residence to the Oval Office, a passage long associated with images of US presidents moving between their offices and home.

Ballroom project

The proposal is tied to Trump’s plan to build a large ballroom on the White House grounds.

Current designs already include a two-storey colonnade connecting the main White House building to the ballroom, which is expected to seat up to 1,000 people and host major events and foreign dignitaries.

Baranes said the ballroom itself would be built to match the height of the existing White House structure, in an effort to preserve its historic proportions.

First West Wing changes

This marks the first time plans have been publicly disclosed that would involve structural changes to the West Wing.

The new floor would also be positioned above the White House press room, where official briefings are held, adding to concerns among journalists and preservation advocates.

Growing criticism

Trump has already faced backlash for ordering the demolition of the East Wing, traditionally home to the First Lady’s offices, without consulting historic preservation groups or the Capital Region Commission.

He has also been criticised for paving over the Rose Garden, a space used for decades for official ceremonies and announcements.

Rising costs

The president appointed adviser Will Scharf to lead the Washington, DC Commission on the Redevelopment of the State House, further consolidating control over the project.

The estimated cost of the ballroom has increased significantly. Initially placed at $200 million when plans were revealed in July, Trump said in December that the price tag could reach $400 million.
