Trump once again commented on a young woman’s looks during a speech. This time, he also seemed to also trash her job performance.
Last night, Trump’s rally speeches continued, this time in Ohio. The speeches are a last-ditch effort to try to boost the Republican turnout for the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump’s speech featured many of the same things the other speeches in the other states did—it was a lot about himself. This time, the speech also featured cameos from celebrities like former NFL head coach Jon Gruden and YouTuber Jake Paul.
But the most surprising and eye-opening thing came when Trump started to comment on a female basketball player’s looks, all while accidentally criticizing her basketball abilities.
A beautiful woman, but a horrible basketball player
It all started when Trump went off-script and on one of his tangents. This time he mentioned the name Sophie Cunningham, a WNBA player from the Indiana Fever. He seemed to compliment her looks while diminishing her actual abilities as a basketball player.
“Sophie is a beautiful young woman,” Trump said, before adding, “You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be quite good.”
Trump made a comment about her perceived beauty that he had just said seconds earlier would end a “political career in the modern-day political world.”
How Cunningham became a MAGA darling
The brazen objectification of Sophie Cunningham underscores the fact that she has had a bad season for the Fever. The guard averaged a putrid 7.9 points per game – her lowest since 2021.
However, the reason why Trump even mentioned a bench player in the WNBA is that Cunningham became somewhat of a favorite in the MAGA world when she started venturing into the culture war debate on transgender people competing in sports.
During an interview, Cunningham said that it was “common sense” to keep transgender people out of competitive sports.
Those comments caused a culture war storm inside the WNBA where protests outside the games overshadowed the ongoing season.
