The president showed his true feelings toward his own voters.

Getting invited to a luxury resort sounds like the ultimate treat.

Most people would jump at the chance to dine at an exclusive club with a powerful host.

Yet nothing ruins a generous offer faster than the host suddenly deciding you cannot afford the menu.

A pricey burger

US President Donald Trump pitched a strange closing argument to voters on Tuesday ahead of next week’s midterm elections, HuffPost reported. While everyday families struggle with the cost of food and petrol, he promoted a pledge to hand every adult $5,000 if Republicans win, an idea former prosecutors have labelled a bribe.

According to HuffPost, few observers expect those payments to ever arrive, though the president noted the cash would come with one rule.

“But the only caveat is that the Trump dividend, it has, you have to spend the money in the United States,” he said. “Go to Florida. Go to any one of our great places. You could even come to Mar-a-Lago. You’ll be my guest at Mar-a-Lago.”

Right after floating the idea, he began walking it back.

“The problem is that for $5,000, the most you’ll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert,” he said.

Taking back the invite

Even that sky-high meal deal seemed too generous a second later.

“I’m not even sure you could buy that,” he said, before pulling the offer off the table completely: “No, don’t go there. That’s not a good place if you’re price conscious.”

The comments landed awkwardly given the financial squeeze facing ordinary households. Back in 2024, Trump returned to the White House largely on pledges to lower the cost of groceries, fuel, and daily bills from day one.

Instead, living costs have kept climbing. HuffPost noted that his war in Iran has driven fuel prices sharply higher, pushing inflation up by 3.7% last month compared to a year ago.

Online critics quickly piled on over X. According to HuffPost, detractors accused the president of showing his true feelings toward his own voters, saying it was tacky to boast about his club’s extreme prices while telling supporters they were too poor to eat there.
