When international negotiations stall, leaders often throw massive financial demands at the wall. Diplomacy usually stretches on for months behind closed doors. But today, a bitter dispute over wartime damages is playing out for the whole world to see.
A massive financial fight
The United States and Iran are currently locked in a bitter standoff over control of a critical global waterway. Tensions spiked recently when Tehran demanded financial payments before reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Hotnews president Donald Trump responded to those conditions on Monday. He completely flipped the script during a social media update.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, the American leader declared that Washington would seek its own massive payouts from the Middle Eastern nation. He promised to push this issue firmly during any upcoming talks.
Naming the price
The president noted that Iran “demands compensation for damages suffered during the five months of military conflict” in the region. He claimed this specific financial request had never appeared in previous diplomatic meetings.
He then laid out his own massive counter-offer. Trump stated he wants money for victims of regional attacks.
“But it’s an interesting idea because, in the same way, I also demand compensation from Iran for all the people it has killed and injured,” he wrote. He specifically pointed to the families of sailors who died in the USS Cole bombing in Yemen back in 2000.
Adding new conditions
His list of financial demands goes beyond military casualties. Trump stated that Iranian leaders must also pay the families of domestic anti-government protesters.
The president claimed that domestic forces have killed hundreds of thousands of demonstrators over the years. He specifically alleged that 52,000 people died during the last five months alone.
This sudden exchange of heavy financial conditions makes an immediate peace deal highly unlikely. Both sides are digging in deeper.
Tehran previously outlined a strict list of demands for Washington. Iranian officials want the United States to “finally end the war and aggression” against them and their regional allies.
A long list
Those allied groups include various armed factions operating across Yemen and Iraq. The demands do not end there.
Tehran also wants international forces to lift a heavy blockade currently restricting Iranian ports. They expect Washington to “fully compensate Iran for the damages caused” by recent hostilities.
Finally, Iranian leaders are demanding an end to crushing economic sanctions. They also want their frozen global assets released without any strings attached, according to the news agency AFP.
