During an informal visit to Ireland, Donald Trump focused on a golf tournament in County Clare. The trip went smoothly at first. Then, a speech to embassy staff in Dublin caught the ear of political observers.
Addressing the crowd, the president momentarily claimed his wife had made the journey. He quickly caught himself.
“My wife is here. My wife is here in spirit. She’s watching right now,” he told the assembled officials, according to the Irish Star.
Explaining the absence
He then offered a bit of context for her absence, gesturing toward the US ambassador to Ireland and his wife.
“He said ‘Say hello,’ because she is very friendly with these two people. I said ‘Well, why don’t you come with me?’ and she said ‘Well, it’s a seven-hour trip, maybe I’m not that friendly’,” he recalled.
For some watchers, the moment felt telling. The Daily Beast’s Joanna Coles noted the gaffe “looked to me like that was a husband whining about his wife not being with him.”

As for his actual travel companion, the president made the journey alongside his assistant Natalie Harp.
Observing the scene, Coles pointed out that Harp was greeting dignitaries “as if she were the First Lady.”
Political analyst David Rothkopf offered a very blunt assessment of the stage mix-up.
“I think he’s just confused generally all the time,” he said.
Stepping back completely
The episode highlights a broader trend. Melania Trump spends most of her time far away from Washington.
Her public presence has dropped significantly. An NBC News analysis found she has made just 38 public appearances during this period.
Rothkopf views this arrangement as completely unprecedented.
“There has never been a president who is actually married to somebody whose wife was less involved in his business than Melania is,” he noted. “She just is absent without leave. She’s not showing up. And so he’s got to deal with that.”
