A planned visit by senior American representatives to Greenland is once again drawing political scrutiny in Nuuk, where leaders remain cautious about Washington’s growing interest in the Arctic territory.
The US delegation is expected to attend the “Future Greenland” business conference on May 19-20, according to DR News. Officials in Greenland have signaled that any meetings with American representatives will depend on a clearly defined agenda.
Political caution
Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said earlier this week that Greenland would not agree to discussions without knowing the purpose in advance.
“We know this game in Greenland. We have been under this pressure for 15-16 months,” Nielsen said, according to DR.
Foreign Minister Múte B. Egede expressed a similar position. In comments to DR, he said Greenland would not hold meetings “just for the sake of meeting” and warned that US officials would hear Greenland’s views on American behavior over the past year and a half.
DR also reported that representatives from Denmark’s acting government will not attend the conference because of the current parliamentary situation in Copenhagen.
Trump supporter returns
Amid preparations for the conference, Greenlandic Trump supporter Jørgen Boassen has returned to Nuuk after several months in the United States.
According to DR, Boassen said he came back after being contacted by associates of Jeff Landry, the Louisiana governor expected to join the American delegation as US special envoy to Greenland.
“I got a call from Jeff’s friends, and Jeff wanted me to go to Greenland because he needs help talking to the Greenlanders about what they think about the situation,” Boassen told DR.
DR reported that Boassen plans to organize meetings with Greenlanders and help welcome the delegation during the visit.
Growing tensions
Trump’s repeated interest in Greenland has fueled political debate and public frustration across the territory over the past year.
Boassen dismissed concerns surrounding the upcoming American visit.
“There is nothing to be nervous about, he is a good man and down to earth,” he told DR, referring to Landry.
It remains unclear whether Landry will hold formal meetings with Greenland’s government during the conference. According to DR, Greenlandic officials have not yet confirmed any official talks with the American delegation.
