A quiet local case has become the focus of an official investigation. The circumstances are being reviewed as residents prepare to mark a public act of remembrance.

The town council of Bríon has declared two days of official mourning after a two-year-old girl died on Wednesday in the Galician municipality, according to the regional newspaper La Voz de Galicia.

Flags at municipal buildings were ordered to fly at half-staff on Thursday and Friday. Residents were also invited to observe a minute of silence at noon on Friday in the town hall square.

The council expressed its “deepest condolences and all our support” to the child’s family and said municipal resources would be available “in these difficult times,” The Guardian reports.

Guardia Civil judicial police are investigating what happened.

Investigators review the father’s route

La Voz de Galicia writes that the father left home in the morning with his two children in the car. After dropping the older child at school, he was expected to take the younger girl to nursery.

A phone call appears to have interrupted that routine. The father then drove to the family business, leaving the girl inside the parked vehicle without realizing it.

The situation was discovered around 3 p.m., when the girl’s mother went to the nursery and was told that the child had not arrived.

Emergency services were called, and the girl was taken to a health center in Bertamiráns, in Ames. She arrived in cardiorespiratory arrest and died there.

Officials cited high temperatures as a factor

The Spanish outlet reported that high temperatures and dehydration contributed to the tragedy.

The Guardian, citing Spain’s state meteorological agency Aemet, wrote that parts of the country were facing unusually high May temperatures, with some areas reaching 36C to 38C.

Safety experts warn that parked vehicles can heat up rapidly, and young children are especially vulnerable because their body temperature rises faster than that of adults.

La Voz de Galicia also mentioned a similar case in O Porriño in 2023, when a two-year-old boy died after being left in a car when his mother went to work.
