Ukraine offers priceless war secrets to fund cheap new missile shield

Protecting the skies has become one of the most expensive challenges in modern warfare.

While billions are spent on importing cutting-edge defense shields, relying on a single overseas supplier creates both financial and logistical strain. Now, a major push is underway to shift that burden closer to home, reports United24Media.

Seeking new shields

During talks in London on June 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron. They focused heavily on countering Russian ballistic missile attacks. According to The Guardian, Zelenskyy said European powers agreed to help Ukraine defend its skies.

Right now, Western forces rely heavily on American technology. The US Patriot system is one of the few platforms that can stop ballistic targets, especially using advanced PAC-3 MSE interceptors. But keeping these systems loaded has become an unsustainable financial burden.

Each Patriot interceptor costs roughly $4 million, and as Russian missile strikes continue, stockpiles are dropping fast. To fix this, Zelenskyy proposed a joint solution. He wants the UK, France, and Germany to pool resources and build a new, European-controlled interceptor program.

In exchange, Ukraine will share valuable data from over four years of full-scale warfare. “The UK is among them. And NATO is very interested in it. This is priceless information. There is a huge volume of it,” Zelenskyy said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Building a replacement

Currently, Europe has few domestic options. The only regional platform with anti-ballistic capability is the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system. United24 Media reported that Ukraine received a single battery in 2023, but low production volumes cannot match surging demand.

Because of these limits, Ukrainian defense firms are creating local alternatives. Manufacturer Fire Point recently shared footage showing successful tests of its new FP-7.X interceptor missile. They want a complete system ready by 2027.

Cost is the main driver here. Fire Point co-founder Denis Shtilyerman said the company wants each interceptor to cost under $1 million. That is a massive drop from US prices. Shtilyerman noted that defeating a single ballistic missile often requires multiple Patriots, making current operations incredibly expensive.
