Ukraine says its forces have struck a Russian missile warship near the naval base in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, extending long-range attacks far beyond the main battlefield.

United24Media reported that the overnight operation targeted a Project 22800 Karakurt-class vessel capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles frequently used in Russian strikes against Ukraine.

Naval target hit

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the attack took place near Russia’s naval facilities in the Caspian Sea region.

“The Defense Forces of Ukraine struck a Project 22800 Karakurt multipurpose small missile ship in the area of the Kaspiysk base,” the military said.

Ukrainian officials stated that the extent of the damage was still being assessed.

Deep strikes continue

The reported operation is one of the latest examples of Ukraine targeting military infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.

United24Media noted that the Karakurt-class ships are heavily armed despite their relatively compact size.

The vessels reportedly carry vertical launch systems capable of firing Kalibr cruise missiles as well as P-800 Oniks anti-ship missiles.

More military sites targeted

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, overnight attacks also struck several Russian military facilities in occupied eastern Ukraine.

The military said targets included a command post in Sosnivka in the Luhansk region, a drone control centre near Yasne in Donetsk region, and ammunition and fuel storage facilities elsewhere in occupied territory.

Ukraine additionally reported strikes on Russian troop concentrations near Dersove in Donetsk region and Smyle in Zaporizhzhia region.

Pressure on Russia

United24Media reported that the Karakurt-class ships are also equipped with AK-176MA naval guns, AK-630 defence systems and, in newer variants, Pantsir-ME naval air defence systems.

The strike follows another recent Ukrainian drone attack on a similar Russian missile ship near the port of Primorsk in Russia’s Leningrad region.

Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone and special operations attacks to weaken Russian military logistics, naval infrastructure and missile-launch capabilities far from the front lines.
