In response to the persistent threat of Russian airstrikes, officials in Ukraine's Kharkiv region have initiated the construction of heavily fortified underground schools.

These unique educational facilities are designed to provide a safe environment for children to continue their studies amidst the ongoing conflict.

Architect Anton Korotovskykh, in an interview with Reuters, revealed that two underground schools are currently under construction. Each of these schools has the capacity to accommodate up to 500 individuals and is built to withstand direct hits.

Korotovskykh further mentioned plans to construct more such underground schools by the end of next year, emphasizing the urgency and importance of safeguarding educational infrastructure in the war-torn region.

Kharkiv, frequently targeted in Russian attacks, has seen significant damage to its educational facilities. Korotovskykh noted that 817 educational institutions in the region have suffered destruction or damage due to the Russian invasion.

This move towards underground schools represents a resilient step in ensuring uninterrupted education for the children of Kharkiv amid the challenges of war.
