A bipartisan group of American lawmakers has voiced support for Ukraine’s latest ceasefire initiative, calling on Russia to halt attacks and engage seriously in peace efforts.

Members of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus said Kyiv’s proposal represented a genuine attempt to reduce violence while preserving the country’s sovereignty amid the ongoing war, reports Kyiv Post.

Bipartisan backing

In a joint statement released Tuesday, caucus co-chairs Marcy Kaptur, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Quigley and Joe Wilson described Ukraine’s proposed temporary ceasefire as an “olive branch.”

The lawmakers said the proposal demonstrated Ukraine’s willingness to pursue peace despite continued Russian military pressure.

“In the face of Russia’s continued aggression, this proposal reflects the moral clarity of a free people: willing to seek peace, unwilling to surrender sovereignty, and determined to defend the dignity of their nation,” the statement said.

The group urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept the ceasefire beginning Tuesday night and respect it fully.

Criticism of Moscow

The lawmakers accused Russia of continuing attacks on Ukrainian cities, civilians and energy infrastructure while publicly presenting itself as open to negotiations.

According to the statement, any ceasefire agreement must be applied consistently and not used for political or military advantage.

“A ceasefire cannot be selective, conditional, or timed for political convenience. It must be real, verifiable, and honored in good faith,” the caucus said.

The lawmakers argued that the Kremlin now faced a choice between prolonging the war or taking what they called a meaningful step toward peace.

Continued support

The statement also highlighted ongoing bipartisan support in Washington for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and defence against Russian aggression.

The Congressional Ukraine Caucus said both Republicans and Democrats remained aligned in backing international law and Ukraine’s right to sovereignty.

“The path to peace is open. The responsibility to take it rests with the Kremlin,” the lawmakers said. “America stands with the people of Ukraine.”
