Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were evacuated to an underground bunker in northeast Tehran after Israel launched its latest strikes, Iran International and Digi24 reported.

The information comes from two informed sources inside Iran.

According to the report, Khamenei and his entire family, including his son Mojtaba, are currently in the Lavizan bunker.

This is not the first time Khamenei has taken shelter there.

He also used the bunker during Iran’s previous attacks on Israel in April and October 2024. During those times, Mojtaba was with him, but his other sons, Masoud and Mostafa, were not present.

Timeline of Iran’s Attacks on Israel

Iran’s first direct attack on Israel took place on April 13, 2024.

Over 300 missiles and drones targeted Israeli military sites. That attack was a response to the killing of two Iranian generals in Damascus.

A second major attack followed on October 1, 2024.

Iran launched around 200 missiles targeting Israeli military facilities. This strike was in response to the assassination of Iranian-aligned militant leaders, including former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Israeli Strike Reaches Mashhad

On Sunday, Israel expanded its strikes and targeted the city of Mashhad for the first time. Mashhad is located 2,300 kilometers from Israel.

A Middle Eastern diplomatic source told Iran International that the airstrike on Mashhad was meant to send a message to Khamenei that he is not safe anywhere in Iran.

The source said that Israel could have killed Khamenei on the first night of its operation but chose not to. Instead, Israel reportedly wanted to give Khamenei one final chance to abandon Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

According to the same source, former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously given Khamenei a two-month deadline to stop Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

Khamenei ignored both Trump’s warning and Israel’s warnings.

With the start of Israel’s airstrikes, Khamenei was reportedly given another opportunity to reconsider and halt uranium enrichment.

Two U.S. officials told Reuters on Sunday that President Trump had recently opposed an Israeli plan to assassinate Khamenei.
