William has previously indicated that he does not see royal customs as fixed, fuelling expectations of a more modern approach when he eventually becomes King.
Questioning tradition
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has questioned whether William would want formal gestures of deference to continue. Writing in The i Paper, she asked: “And will our future monarch really expect people to bow and curtsey to him?”
Bond argued that such customs feel increasingly out of step with modern values. “Fawning gestures of servility like that sit awkwardly in a world of inclusion and equality,” she wrote.
She noted that William already appears comfortable greeting people without formality and said she hopes he would “officially put an end to the bowing and scraping” when he becomes King.
Signals of reform
The Prince of Wales has previously hinted that change is inevitable within the institution. He has said that he “won’t be bound by history or tradition”, a remark that has been widely interpreted as a sign of a less rigid monarchy under his leadership.

Embracing change
In comments made during a recent television interview, William addressed his attitude toward reform directly. “Change for good, and I embrace that, I enjoy that change,” he said.
“I don’t fear it — that’s the bit that excites me, the idea of being able to bring some change,” he added, while stressing that any adjustments would not be extreme. “Not overly radical, but changes that I think need to happen,” the Express reports.
Looking ahead
William has also spoken about the importance of remaining authentic as his responsibilities increase. He has emphasised that titles and roles should not overshadow personal values or purpose.
As discussion continues about how the monarchy may evolve, calls to reassess ceremonial traditions are likely to remain part of the debate surrounding the future King.
