Passengers on a routine flight witnessed an extraordinary moment.

What began as a standard journey turned into a race against time in the air, reports 20Minutes.

Birth on board

A woman gave birth to a baby girl aboard a Delta Airlines flight in the United States, around 30 minutes before landing, according to 20minutes.

The flight was traveling from Atlanta, Georgia, to Portland, Oregon, when the unexpected delivery took place on Friday.

Help in the air

Several people on board stepped in to assist the mother during the birth.

Delta Airlines said a doctor and two nurses among the passengers helped deliver the baby with support from the cabin crew.

“We thank the crew and medical volunteers who were on board for stepping in to provide care to a customer on board before landing in Portland,” the airline said in a statement.

Safe landing

The aircraft was given priority for landing, with emergency services waiting on the ground.

Despite the unusual circumstances, the landing itself was reported to be smooth.

The airline added it wished “all the best to the new family.”

Rare event

The flight, identified as DL478, lasted more than five hours and carried 153 passengers, along with two pilots and four crew members.

Delta noted that it does not impose strict restrictions on pregnant passengers, unlike some other airlines.

Mid-air births remain rare but highlight the unpredictable nature of air travel.
