Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has become the first foreign leader to hold direct talks with Pope Leon XIV, just days after the American-born pontiff was elected leader of the Catholic Church.
During the phone call, both leaders agreed to stay in contact and explore plans for a personal meeting. Zelensky extended a formal invitation for Pope Leon XIV to visit Ukraine, expressing the powerful symbolism such a gesture would hold for his nation.
“A visit like this would bring true hope to all believers and to our people,” Zelensky stated, according to 20minutos.
Vatican’s Potential Role in Reuniting Ukrainian Children
The Ukrainian leader also raised the urgent humanitarian crisis of Ukrainian children allegedly deported to Russia. He appealed for the Vatican’s help to secure their return.

“Ukraine relies on the Vatican’s contribution to bring these children back home to their families,” Zelensky emphasized.
The pope had already referenced the plight of these children during his first Regina Caeli prayer on Sunday, calling for all minors to be returned to their homes.
Focus on Peace Efforts and Ceasefire
Zelensky updated Pope Leon XIV on Ukraine’s coordination with international partners to push for a full, unconditional ceasefire lasting at least 30 days.
He reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution: “Ukraine wishes to end this war, is doing everything possible to achieve this goal, and awaits corresponding measures from Russia,” the Ukrainian government noted in its statement following the call.
