Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is heading to Istanbul with the clear objective of meeting directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak, any discussions with lower-ranking Russian officials would be “meaningless.”
I will wait for Putin in Turkey on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for other excuses.

Speaking to the Kyiv Independent, Podoliak emphasized that Zelensky will not meet with any other Russian representatives, regardless of their rank.
“This is the format,” he said. “Only Putin can decide whether to continue or stop the war.”
The stance represents a shift away from earlier diplomatic engagements, where lower-level negotiations often led to stalemates or symbolic outcomes.
Kyiv now wants direct accountability and real movement—starting with a “complete and lasting ceasefire,” expected to begin imminently.

While the Kremlin has publicly expressed “readiness” for direct talks, it has yet to confirm Putin’s participation in Thursday’s proposed summit.
Ukraine and its Western allies have issued a stark ultimatum, warning that Russia must agree to a full ceasefire or face a fresh wave of tough sanctions.
