Getting two warring leaders into the same room is often the hardest part of ending a conflict.

Behind closed doors, diplomats float endless ideas about neutral ground and perfect timing. Now, one leader is trying to force his rival’s hand with a bold new location, reports Digi24.ro

A bold American pitch

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is pushing for a dramatic new setting for high-level peace talks. During a weekend phone call with Donald Trump, the leader pitched the idea of meeting Vladimir Putin on American soil.

According to Digi24, citing AFP and Agerpres, Zelensky hopes that using the United States as a host country could break the diplomatic deadlock. He wants to corner the Russian leader into accepting a formal invitation.

“Yesterday (Sunday), I discussed with President Trump the possibility of organizing such a meeting in the United States, in a format that would be much harder for Putin to refuse,” Zelensky announced in a video posted on X.

The Ukrainian head of state remains cautious about the actual outcome. “We will see what will come of this,” he added in his public address.

The location problem

Agreeing on a safe location remains a massive hurdle. Zelensky has repeatedly offered to sit down with his Russian counterpart face to face.

But the two camps are completely deadlocked on the venue. According to reports, the Kremlin insists that any direct negotiations must happen inside the borders of Moscow.

That condition is a total non-starter. Travelling to the Russian capital under the current circumstances is something the Ukrainian leader absolutely cannot accept.

Gathering the heavyweights

Searching for a workable alternative, Zelensky floated another major global stage on Monday. He suggested bringing the Russian president to the upcoming G7 summit in France.

“We sent the message that we are ready to meet with Putin at the G7 because (Donald) Trump will be there and (Emmanuel) Macron will be there, so the Europeans plus America. This is a good opportunity, I think, a very good opportunity for us all to meet,” Zelensky told reporters in English.

This strategy relies on bringing Western leaders together to create a united front. Yet, Moscow continues to brush off the pressure.

“Europe and the US have reached an agreement, and Russia has demonstrated once again that it is not ready to hold talks,” the Ukrainian president stated.
