“The choice is yours” sayd the Ukrainian leader.

Diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine received a fresh jolt this week after Volodymyr Zelensky made a direct appeal to Vladimir Putin.

Rather than addressing intermediaries, allies or international organizations, the Ukrainian president chose to write directly to the Kremlin leader, urging him to enter negotiations and personally help bring Europe’s largest conflict in decades to an end.

Message arrives at a moment when fighting continues across multiple fronts and international attention is increasingly divided by other global crises.

Direct Appeal to the Kremlin

Published as an open letter, Zelensky’s message called for face-to-face discussions between the two leaders and argued that delaying negotiations would only prolong the suffering caused by the war.

“The choice is yours now. Enough of war. Ukraine proposes to end this war,” Zelensky wrote according to Exptress.

Ukrainian leader argued that waiting for outside powers to refocus their attention would be a mistake, pointing to Washington’s growing involvement in developments surrounding Iran.

Instead, he proposed direct engagement between Kyiv and Moscow as a path toward a negotiated settlement.

Kremlin Confirms Receipt

Russian officials later acknowledged receiving the letter.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had been informed of the message, though he had not yet reviewed its contents in full due to official engagements.

Response stopped short of indicating whether Moscow would accept Zelensky’s proposal for a meeting.

Putin has repeatedly maintained that Russia remains open to negotiations, though both sides continue to disagree on the conditions required for any meaningful peace process.

Peace Offer Comes With a Warning

While extending an invitation for talks, Zelensky also made clear that Ukraine is prepared to continue fighting if diplomacy fails.

Letter outlined several proposals, including a complete prisoner exchange, efforts to return civilians and children displaced during the conflict, and international monitoring of any future ceasefire.

At the same time, he warned that continued warfare would carry consequences not only for Ukraine but also for Russia itself.

“If you do not personally come to the conclusion that it is time to end this war, Ukraine will continue fighting for its existence,” Zelensky wrote.

He argued that historical pressures inside Russia could eventually become a challenge for the Kremlin if the conflict drags on indefinitely.

War Enters Another Chapter

Fighting has continued since Russian forces launched their full-scale invasion, with both sides sustaining heavy losses and carrying out regular missile, drone and artillery attacks.

Recent diplomatic efforts involving representatives linked to US President Donald Trump have failed to produce a breakthrough, leaving negotiations largely stalled.

Zelensky’s letter nevertheless represents one of the clearest public attempts in recent months to restart direct political dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow.

Whether the appeal leads to talks now depends largely on the response from the Kremlin, which has yet to indicate whether Putin is willing to sit down with his Ukrainian counterpart.
