Rising tensions between major powers have put more attention on Greenland and its strategic location.
The Arctic has become increasingly important to the security of Europe and North America. Denmark, Greenland and the United States are now preparing a new agreement focused on security in the region.
Permanent control over security
US President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, according to DR. He said the deal would give the US permanent control over security and other needs in Greenland.
Trump also said the US would begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland. He said there are several suitable locations and that the US would work with Greenland’s population on the development and construction.
The Danish government confirmed that the three sides are expected to sign an agreement designed to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region. The agreement is expected to be signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly. It will then have to go through the necessary parliamentary procedures before taking effect.
Strengthening common security in unstable times
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was pleased that the countries were moving toward an agreement. She said it would strengthen common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic and benefit NATO and Europe.
She also said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. It also recognizes the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of Greenland’s government, said the agreement would strengthen security for Greenland, Denmark, the United States and the wider Western alliance.
He said the agreement also recognizes Greenland’s interests and its role in international cooperation.
The announcement follows months of discussions between the three sides. In January, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s then foreign affairs minister Vivian Motzfeldt said a high-level working group would be created to find common solutions after meetings with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The planned agreement comes at a time when security concerns in the Arctic are growing. Denmark, Greenland and the US are now preparing to formalize their cooperation in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
