The continuing absence is changing the royal family’s public schedule. Crown Prince Haakon is temporarily carrying the monarch’s constitutional responsibilities.
Norway’s King Harald remains at Rikshospitalet in Oslo, where he has been receiving treatment since August 17.
The Royal House said on August 23 that the 89-year-old monarch was being treated with antibiotics after bacteria were found in his bloodstream. He responded to the medication and his condition was described as stable.
A further update on August 24 said there had been no significant change. Harald remains on sick leave until further notice, while Crown Prince Haakon serves as regent.
The Palace has not indicated when he may return to official duties, leaving the regency arrangement in place for the time being.
Doctors remain cautious
Harald was admitted after developing fluid retention while receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia.
Anette Hylen Ranhoff, a professor and senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, told NRK that his response to antibiotics was encouraging. She also noted that age and existing medical conditions can make recovery more complicated.
Håkon Ihle-Hansen, a senior physician and chairman of the Norwegian Geriatrics Society, told the Norwegian broadcaster that successful treatment of an infection does not always produce an immediate improvement in an older patient’s general condition.
He added that elderly patients can require weeks or months to rebuild strength following hospitalization.
Royal schedule changes
Harald’s absence has already affected planned royal engagements. NRK reports that several appearances involving the king have been cancelled or adjusted.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit is also recovering after undergoing a lung transplant in June. She continues to receive medical follow-up at Rikshospitalet.
Haakon and Mette-Marit went to the hospital on August 25, their 25th wedding anniversary. NRK did not say whether they were there to see Harald, as the crown princess also receives treatment there.
Queen Sonja, Princess Märtha Louise, Princess Astrid and several grandchildren have also been seen at Rikshospitalet.
The latest official update leaves the position unchanged: Harald remains hospitalized in stable condition, and Haakon continues as regent.
