Former Pro Bowl Tight End Comes Out of Retirement to Join Miami
The Miami Dolphins have officially acquired veteran tight end Darren Waller from the New York Giants, the team announced Monday. The move follows reports from last week that Waller would be ending his retirement to join the AFC East contenders.
Waller, who briefly stepped away from football after the 2023 season, will now bring his experience and pass-catching ability to a reshaped Dolphins tight end room.
Dolphins Send 2026 Sixth-Round Pick in Return for Waller
As part of the trade agreement, the Dolphins will send a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Giants, who will include a conditional seventh-round selection in 2027 in the deal.
Waller, 31, emerged as a star with the Raiders between 2019 and 2020, recording a combined 197 receptions over those two seasons. However, injuries have impacted his production in recent years. Last season with the Giants, he appeared in 12 games and totaled 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown.

The Dolphins recently dealt Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, creating room for a veteran addition. Waller will now compete alongside a mix of young and unproven talent including Pharaoh Brown, Julian Hill, Tanner Conner, Jalin Conyers, and Hayden Rucci.
With a dynamic offense already in place, Miami hopes Waller can recapture his previous form and become a reliable target in the passing game heading into the 2025 season.
