Mathias Christiansen has described his return to elite badminton as a “fantastic feeling” after serving a one-year suspension for violations of anti-doping regulations. The 31-year-old rejoined Denmark’s national team setup on May 22 and resumed his partnership with Alexandra Bøje.

It felt special to walk into the Brøndby hall again after a year away,” Christiansen told TV 2 Sport. “My teammates and coach welcomed me warmly, and it has been great to be back.

A Year of Perspective and Private Training

Christiansen was sidelined following three whereabouts failures, which led to a one-year suspension from July 21, 2024. Although not related to a failed doping test, the errors violated anti-doping rules requiring athletes to report their location daily.

During his ban, Christiansen trained independently across Denmark, including stints at Peter Gade’s academy in Gentofte and at facilities in Østerbro. He also organized private training camps in Asia to maintain his level.

This year has taught me a lot about myself,” he said. “I’ve lived in a bubble for over a decade with 150 to 180 travel days a year. This break put things into perspective and helped me appreciate what I do even more.

Reuniting With Alexandra Bøje

During Christiansen’s absence, Bøje partnered with Dutch player Robin Tabeling. The duo experienced modest success, highlighted by a victory at the German Open. Christiansen supported her from the sidelines during tournaments, including Denmark Open and the European Championships.

Now, Christiansen and Bøje are back together on court and in their personal lives. The ban did not affect their relationship, Christiansen said.

We’ve grown closer through this. Everyone can make mistakes. This hasn’t impacted our personal relationship at all,” he explained. “I think we’re stronger than ever as a team.

Eyes on the Macau Open for Competitive Return

Christiansen’s return to tournament play will come at the Macau Open in late July, marking the end of his suspension. While he has already resumed training with the national squad, the event will be his first competitive appearance in over a year.

With a renewed outlook and a strong partnership, Christiansen is optimistic about what lies ahead. “We’ve prepared well and are ready to get back into competition. I believe we’re coming back even stronger,” he said.
