A shifting timeline
The Star Wars saga has never followed a simple order. Viewers can watch the original trilogy first, then the prequels and sequels, or follow the chronological timeline instead.
Beyond the films, numerous TV series have added new layers. These shows often insert events into earlier periods, reshaping what audiences thought they knew.
According to Lucasfilm’s evolving canon, such retroactive changes have become a defining feature of the franchise’s storytelling.
Expanding the story
One example came with the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which introduced a previously unseen encounter between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan.

Maul’s return
Perhaps the most notable of these changes involves Darth Maul. Originally believed dead after The Phantom Menace, the character was later revealed to have survived.
In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Maul’s survival was explained through his intense hatred, which kept him alive long enough to rebuild himself with mechanical legs.
He was later restored to sanity and became a major figure in both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.
A lasting impact
Reintroducing Maul allowed the franchise to transform him into one of its most complex villains. His role in major story arcs, including Mandalore and his final duel with Obi-Wan, became fan favorites.
This decision by George Lucas is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s most effective narrative revisions.
Yet, until now, the full potential of that choice had not been explored.
A new chapter
That is set to change with the release of Maul – Shadow Lord on April 6, 2026, on Disney+.
The series will place Maul at the center of the story for the first time, focusing on his efforts to rebuild his criminal empire after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
It is expected to connect storylines between The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, including his leadership of Crimson Dawn.
Full circle moment
By giving Maul a leading role, the franchise is finally delivering on a storyline more than a decade in the making.
If the character’s past portrayals are any indication, the series could mark a defining moment for one of Star Wars’ most enduring villains.
