High electricity costs have squeezed British households for years, forcing people to search for smart ways to trim monthly expenses.
Finding simple ways to cut power bills usually requires costly home upgrades or long contracts.
Now, a fresh policy shift is opening up an easier path for millions of residents across the country.
Power from sockets
Starting today, the UK has officially legalised plug-in solar panels, allowing households to generate their own electricity by plugging small panels straight into normal wall outlets, according to a press release from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
These compact kits yield up to 800 watts of electricity. That is enough energy to cover roughly one-fifth of a typical home’s power needs, running appliances like fridges, televisions, and routers simultaneously.
By generating clean energy on balconies or garden patios, families can cut their annual electricity costs by as much as 110 pounds without paying installation fees.
Safety checks confirmed the devices meet strict British electrical standards. According to the press release, the regulations are even tighter than those in Germany, where nearly half a million households added similar systems last year.
Easy home setup
Major High Street retailers including Argos, Currys, Screwfix, Wickes, and Amazon are preparing to stock the panels online and in physical stores across Great Britain.
“Plug-in solar is a simple, affordable way for households to take control of their energy bills and start saving straight away,” said Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh.
Renters and apartment owners can use the technology, though residents should verify if they need permission from landlords, freeholders, or local councils beforehand.
“Until now, generating solar power has required the right roof, the right home and significant upfront investment,” noted Gary Booker, Managing Director of British Gas.
Cutting energy bills
Demand for home renewables is hitting historic levels. Industry figures show nearly 150,000 certified rooftop solar installations occurred during the first six months of 2026 alone.
That represents a 17 percent increase over the previous record set in 2025. Battery storage systems doubled over the same period, reaching 36,000 installations.
“Making plug-in solar lawful will bring cheap, clean power to households that have not been able to access these benefits before,” stated Chris Hewitt, CEO of Solar Energy UK.
Government officials hope the change provides instant financial relief to families alongside planned winter VAT cuts on domestic energy.
