The trade conflict between the historical allies has let Donald Trump to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney launched a sharp response to recent Washington rhetoric.
According to Indy100, tensions mounted after the American side began mocking Ottawa on social media. Addressing the public, Carney urged the White House to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough,” if they want real trade negotiations to resume.
The outburst comes after economic talks collapsed in late August. Trump officials have since taunted their northern neighbor, even suggesting renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” and warning that Canada cannot win an economic fight against a much larger neighbor.
In one notable post, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth uploaded a photo of two female Canadian cadets, captioning it “this is real.” Carney called the move “beneath their office.”
High-stakes battle
Washington showed no sign of backing down.
On Fox News, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent fired back. He claimed Carney suffered a “verbal beatdown” from American officials and added, “Well, he was the one who said we were at war.”
Carney remains unyielding. He explained that US demands would leave Canadian firms “gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out.”
The Canadian leader also firmly rejected proposed limits on global trade relationships. “Canada is a sovereign state. We will strike free trade deals with the countries we wish to strike free trade deals,” Carney stated.
A new normal
Workers are bracing for lasting friction.
Bea Bruske, head of the Canadian Labour Congress, noted that Carney warned labor leaders not to expect a quick return to normal. She described the current tension as “a new normal that we have to get adjusted to.”
Political strength at home may be helping Carney stay firm. His party recently swept three crucial by-elections, strengthening his parliamentary position as retaliatory tariffs take effect and threats of economic annexation hover over the border.
