The suit, announced Thursday, is part of a broader push by the federal government to challenge sanctuary city policies across the U.S., which they claim shield undocumented immigrants from federal authorities.

Legal Clash Over Federal vs. Local Authority

According to the Department of Justice, New York’s policies violate the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause by undermining federal law.

The city, they argue, actively interferes with federal immigration efforts by limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

AG Pam Bondi: NYC Endangers Public Safety

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the city’s refusal to honor ICE detention requests has led to the release of “thousands of criminals” back onto the streets.

The lawsuit specifically targets Mayor Eric Adams, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, and several departments accused of non-compliance.

Mayor Eric Adams’ spokesperson, Kayla Mamelak Altus, said the mayor stands by the city’s core policies but wants the city council to review them to allow more flexibility in cases involving violent offenders.

So far, the council has declined to make changes, maintaining its stance on limited ICE cooperation.

Civil Rights Advocates Defend Sanctuary Laws

Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, called the Trump-era deportation strategy a “cruel and unscrupulous” campaign.

She argued that New York has no obligation to allocate resources for federal immigration enforcement and praised the sanctuary laws for making the city safer and more inclusive.

Part of a Nationwide Legal Offensive

This lawsuit follows similar federal actions, including one earlier this month against Los Angeles over its refusal to assist in deportation efforts.
