US intelligence links a failed explosive drone attack near Ukrainian cargo planes at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport to Russia’s military intelligence.
US intelligence officials report that an explosive drone found on Aug. 5 at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport came from Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU.
Security staff spotted the dangerous device resting right next to a Ukrainian cargo plane loaded with ammunition.
The unexploded craft carried military grade explosives, but someone had disconnected its trigger mechanism before guards found it.
That same day, another unidentified flying object hit an incoming DHL cargo jet at the site.
Local outlet Bild reported that four Ukrainian cargo planes were parked at the airport during the terrifying incident.
Following the 2022 invasion, Ukrainian cargo operator Antonov Airlines relocated a significant portion of its operations directly to the Leipzig hub, according to The Kyiv Independent.
Shadow war expands
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held back from naming Moscow directly, but assured reporters that local teams are working hard and will release findings shortly.
Meanwhile, European leaders warned that covert operations against Western infrastructure are escalating.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted the rising threat directly. “Espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, or covert operations by foreign powers aimed at destabilizing Germany or inflicting direct harm are a constant reality,” Dobrindt told reporters.
Fresh clues emerged on Aug. 25 when local police searching open terrain near the airport unearthed additional explosives alongside a third drone, The Kyiv Independent reports.
Threat keeps growing
Police still do not know why those explosives failed to detonate or how the third device fit into the wider scheme.
The near miss has heightened concerns over European security vulnerability.
Mystery aerial encounters have repeatedly disrupted air travel across the continent, forcing unexpected flight diversions and emergency groundings.
Flight operations at Leipzig have been repeatedly compromised this year, with ABC News recording nearly 20 distinct drone sightings since the start of 2026.
European officials warn that foreign covert operations will likely continue as long as Western nations support Ukraine.
Authorities across the continent are now tightening airport security to prevent similar attacks, The Kyiv Independent reports.
Why Leipzig Matters
The incident has raised particular alarm because Leipzig/Halle is far more than a major European cargo airport.
Reuters reported that the facility serves as a critical logistics hub for both NATO and Ukraine, with Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft using the airport to support military transport operations.
That strategic role could help explain why investigators are treating the suspected drone attack as a potential threat to national security rather than simply another case of unexplained drone activity.
If the aircraft carrying military supplies had been the intended target, the failed attack would represent a significant escalation in the shadow conflict surrounding Western support for Ukraine.
