The war in Ukraine is deep into its fifth year, and the shape of it has quietly been rewritten by small, cheap flying machines.
Ukraine’s dedicated drone branch has now published its clearest monthly accounting yet of what that shift costs the Russian army.
In October, the Unmanned Systems Forces killed or wounded 16,796 Russian troops and struck 64,807 Russian targets, both monthly records since the branch was created in June 2025, state news agency Ukrinform reported, citing commander Robert “Magyar” Brovdi.
That pace works out to one Russian asset hit every 41 seconds and one personnel casualty every 159 seconds across the whole month. The daily average was 542 Russian soldiers killed or wounded, and the peak came on October 24, with 701 personnel losses in a single 24-hour period.
The monthly casualty figure is 52.55 percent above August and 24.71 percent above September, Ukrinform reported. The branch flew 255,605 combat missions in October, roughly 151,500 of them strike sorties and 104,000 reconnaissance flights.
Nearly 70 percent fell on three sectors
Three operational directions produced almost 70 percent of the October losses, Kyiv Post reported. The Dobropillia-Pokrovsk axis in Donetsk Oblast, part of the contested Donbas where fighting has been heaviest this year, alone accounted for 7,360 Russian casualties, with the Oleksandrivka and Huliaipole sectors adding another 4,312.
Brovdi said every figure was verified in the Ukrainian military’s Delta situational awareness system, which cross-checks drone footage against other reporting before a casualty is counted.
“A small modern Ukrainian army is winning over the old Soviet system that was in Ukraine,” Brovdi told Kyiv Post, framing the branch as a bet on institutional innovation over mass.
A small branch with an outsized share
The Unmanned Systems Forces make up roughly 2.5 percent of Ukraine’s armed forces, Kyiv Post reports, but now account for about one-third of all Russian battlefield casualties the Ukrainian military attributes to any branch.
Euromaidan Press reported on October 11 that drones are now behind an estimated 96 percent of Russian battlefield losses, and that the USF has hit more than 100,000 Russian troops in 2026 alone.
A Russian military court sentenced Brovdi in absentia to life imprisonment in March on state-directed terrorism charges, and Moscow has placed a $20 million bounty on him, Kyiv Post reported.
