A massive flight risk
British authorities are pushing hard to keep Andrew and Tristan Tate locked up in the United States. According to the BBC and Digi24, the Crown Prosecution Service sent an urgent request to a federal court in Florida.
They want the judge to deny bail for the controversial brothers during their ongoing extradition proceedings. Both men were arrested in Miami last month.
Prosecutors argue that the influencers have the money and global connections to easily flee the country. The brothers hold both American and British citizenship.
“Both Andrew and Tristan Tate have considerable resources, both financial and in terms of social media,” the British prosecutors stated in court documents.
Protecting vulnerable witnesses
The legal team representing the British government also raised serious concerns about witness intimidation. They worry the brothers could use their massive platforms to target people connected to the case.
“All of the people who filed complaints in this case are vulnerable and fear Andrew and Tristan Tate because of the violence inflicted on them, several of them describe assaults and threats with weapons, as well as because of the resources available to the two brothers and their tendency to intimidate vulnerable people who accuse them,” prosecutors added.
Defense lawyers pushed back on Monday. They filed their own documents arguing that their clients have absolutely no plans to run from the law.
Decades in prison
The criminal allegations span several years and involve multiple victims. According to British authorities, four new people recently joined the complaint regarding crimes that took place between 2010 and 2017.
Overall, the Tate brothers face nearly sixty severe criminal charges. These disturbing allegations include rape, sex trafficking, and possessing indecent images of minors.
If a jury eventually finds them guilty, the two men could spend the rest of their lives behind bars. The immediate focus now shifts to a highly anticipated bail hearing on Thursday.
Ultimately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will make the final decision on sending them back to the United Kingdom, Digi24 reported.
