Ukraine is already creating a 100 kilometer deep defensive line to prevent Russian troops from creating a buffer zone in the area.
The northern edge of Ukraine is currently under intense scrutiny following unusual movements. The country has noted what its leader called “specific activity” taking place just across the dividing line with Belarus.
These observations were shared directly with the public to keep citizens informed about the evolving situation. According to an official video address posted on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Facebook account, the government is on high alert.
Zelenskyy stated in his broadcast, “The day before, there was quite specific activity in certain areas along the border between Ukraine and Belarus, from the Belarusian side. We are carefully recording everything, we control everything, and, if necessary, we will respond,” making his government’s stance entirely clear.
Preparation and warnings
The Ukrainian leadership has made it known that they are not taking these developments lightly. Authorities are maintaining a strong posture to protect their national territory against any potential threats.
In the same official address, the president delivered a firm message to anyone considering military involvement. He cautioned that “everyone being drawn into any aggressive activity against Ukraine must understand this.”
While the exact details of the movements remain undisclosed, this is not the first time concerns have been raised. Previous reports from April indicated that new roads and artillery positions were being prepared near the boundary line.
“De facto” annexed by Russia
Belarus is a long-time ally of Russia, and the politcal landscape of Belarus is very similar to the Russian.
Alexander Lukashenko has been in power of Belarus since 1994, three years after the country was created, and he is actually the only person to rule the nation.
He has been in power for 32 years, slightly more than Vladimir Putin, who has been in control of Russia since the year 2000, and over the years, the two have strengthened both economical and military ties.
On March 23, the Institute for the Study of War released an update on the increasing Russian military basing in Belarus, assessing that Belarus has been “de facto” annexed by Russia.
Defensive lines built
Experts are constantly evaluating the scale of these border events to determine the actual level of danger. Andrii Kovalenko, who leads the Center for Countering Disinformation, offered his assessment of the situation.
In a statement published on Telegram, Kovalenko suggested the threat might not be a massive offensive. He noted that the movements could result in, “at most, minor provocations” rather than a full scale assault.
To safeguard the region, military engineers have already been hard at work. Late last month, armed forces started putting together a massive defensive network that stretches deep into the country.
This fortified zone reaches all the way from the Kyiv area to Sumy. It features modern defensive technology, including special measures designed to stop incoming guided drones from breaching the perimeter.
